The Bears of Bear Mountain

In a place not too far from here at the end of a sleepy little farm valley is Bear Mountain, not a very big mountain but much too big to be a hill.  Bear Mountain is bald and rocky at the top but its slopes are covered with pine trees and aspens with lots of streams and shady clearings as well as two small lakes called Sunnyside and Bittersweet.

Bear Mountain gets its name from the population of black bears that live there .   There are lots of cozy little caves all over the mountain that make wonderful places for the bears to sleep.  There are also lots of fresh plant shoots, berries, grubs and insects for the bears to eat as well as fish in the streams.  Plenty of places to sleep, good food and little contact with people make Bear Mountain a perfect home for the bears.

Although the bears are called "Black Bears"  they come in call sorts of colors, black, brown, cinnamon, tan and even white.  Most of the bears on Bear Mountain are dark brown.  Our story revolves around a young male bear called Griz.   Griz is about medium size with dark brown fur all over his body except his nose and inside his ears where the fur is thinner and lighter in color.

By all outward appearances Griz is  a typical Bear Mountain bear,  with little to distinguish him from many of the other bears, however Griz has a personality that makes him unique.  While many bears are solitary animals, preferring to just go about their business, Griz is very sociable and likes nothing better than to spend his days visiting with his friends and joining them on their adventures.   Join Griz as he visits with his friends and explores the many wonders of Bear Mountain.
