Fun in the Snow with Beau and Boo
Winter on Bear Mountain can be cold and snowy, and most of the bears spend much of it in their caves sleeping. There are a few exceptions however, bears who love to go out and play in the snow. Among these bears are Griz, his cousin Beau and his best friend S'Morris. Every winter the three friends can be found skating on frozen Sunnyside Lake, sledding down hills on their backs, and of course building snow creatures. This is the story of one particularly fun day in the snow that the friends spent together with Beau's baby brother Boo. It was a beautiful January morning. There had been a fresh dusting of snow the night before, but the sun had come out and the woods of Bear Mountain twinkled as the sun reflected off the snow and ice crystals. As Griz arrived at the banks of Sunnyside Lake, there was a small fire burning in front of the igloo where S'Morris slept during the winter, and he was toasting marshmallows for breakfast. As the two bears ate and talked, Griz's cousin Beau came into the clearing with his baby brother Boo beside him. This was Boo's first winter, and today Beau was going to show him how much fun winter could be. Griz and S'Morris quickly agreed to join Beau and Boo. As they were already by the lake, the bears decided to go skating. They didn't wear skates, of course; they slide around the ice on their big furry feet. Griz, S'Morris and Beau took turns helping Boo learn how to move his feet so that he wouldn't fall down, while the other two had races across the ice. By the time Boo had become steady on his feet, the other bears were tired and ready for a change. "Lets build snow-creatures," suggested S'Morris. "OH, YES PLEASE!" yelled Boo. The bears talked about it for a minute and it was decided that Beau and Boo would build a snow human, using a big hat that Beau had found in a tree a few days earlier. Griz and S'Morris would build a snow bear. By then it was quite warm (at least for winter on Bear Mountain) and the snow was getting a bit sticky, just right for rolling the big balls that Boo and Beau needed for the snow human. Meanwhile Griz and S'Morris were making a big mound of snow that they were going to carve into a bear shape. Boo had great fun taking a little snow ball and rolling it around and around in the woods until it was large enough to be the snow human's head. Before long Beau and Boo had the head and body made and together they lifted the big ball that would be the head up onto the even bigger ball that was to be the body. Beau showed Boo how to pack snow around the join so that the small ball would not fall off. "OK, Boo, you go down to the lake and find dark colored rocks to use for the buttons, eyes and mouth and I will go find a nose and the hat," said Beau. Before long they were both back. Beau showed Boo how to push the rocks into the snow human to make the face, and they they used a carrot that Beau had borrowed from Rosie to make the nose. After adding some sticks for arms it was finally time to add the hat. Beau reared up up on his back feet and placed the hat on top of the snow human. As the two bears stood back and admired their creation, Griz and S'Morris came and joined them after finishing their snow bear. "Very nice," said Griz. "I can see you will soon be quite the winter bear, little Boo." Rejuvenated by the snow creature building, the four bears decided to climb up to a the top of a long slope and sled down before dinner. After a long climb they reached the top. Griz lay on his back, and with a push from S'Morris started sliding down the hill. Beau lay on his back in the snow and Boo perched on his tummy. With a good hard push from S'Morris, they sped off down the hill. S'Morris followed them by diving onto his stomach and sliding down after everyone. As the bears gathered around S'Morris's campfire eating nuts, berries and of course marshmallows, they told stories of all the fun they had in the snow. |
