Flossie and the Case of Chief Growler's Cave
Another interesting bear is named Flossie. Flossie is the closest thing that Bear Mountain has to a librarian. She loves to read and has a large collection of books gathered from the valley down below that she loans out to the other bears. Flossie's favorite books are historical mysteries. Flossie is also the keeper of the history of Bear Mountain and can frequently be found telling all the young bears about the history of the mountain and the bears who lived there long ago. This is the story of an adventure that Griz and Flossie had together and the mystery that they solved. One day Griz was nosing around on the far side of Sunnyside Lake when he found a small cave that was covered over by vines and roots. Excited to find something new, Griz wriggled his way into the small cave. Inside it was very dark, but Griz noticed an unusual piece of antler. Taking it outside he saw that it had some words carved on it, but it was very dirty and he couldn't tell what it said. "I should take this to Flossie, if anyone can tell me what it is she can." As Griz expected, Flossie was lying outside her cave with her nose in a book. "Hello Flossie, I think I found something that will interest you." While Griz told Flossie how he found the piece of antler, Flossie cleaned it up. "Look here, Griz, now we can see what is carved on this antler." The antler had three prongs that had been sharpened, there was a hole in the other end, and along the side was writing. The writing said "Chief Growler, hero of Bear Mountain." Flossie knew that Chief Growler was a famous bear from a long time ago. Chief Growler had repelled an invasion of big grizzly bears and saved the Bear Mountain bears. "We have a very important piece of history here, Griz," said Flossie. "You take this antler to Mr. Frank and see if he can tell you what it was for, and I will see what else I can learn about Chief Growler." Mr. Frank was busy in his workshop as usual. When Griz showed him his find, he recognized the antler right away. "This is part of an old weapon called a trident. A long stick goes into the hole, for a handle. It was very common in the old days. I think I have a stick that will fit it for you," said Mr. Frank. He attached a long stick to the trident and warned Griz "Be very careful with this, is it very dangerous, old and rare." The next day Griz went to visit Flossie again and told her what he had learned. Flossie had learned a lot as well. Chief Growler had been given the trident by the rest of the bears as thanks for saving them from the grizzly attack. The trident, along with the rest of Chief Growler's possessions, had mysteriously disappeared when he was buried high up on the mountain near Eagle Point so he could watch over the mountain that he loved. "We should go back to that cave that you found, it may contain more of Chief Growler's lost artifacts," Flossie told Griz. So Griz and Flossie set of for the far side of Sunnyside Lake to explore the secret cave. The cave was well hidden, but before long Griz had found the entrance again. With care they cleared away the opening to let more light into the cave. Flossie gasped when she saw what was in the cave; she recognized many things from the stories of Chief Growler she had been reading. There was a big wooden shield with a bear head carved on it, a helmet of wood and antler, a big carved wooden chest and many other items. The next few days were very busy ones for Griz and Flossie. They carefully gathered all of the items from the cave and identified them using Flossie's books and the memories and stories of the older bears. Mr. Frank, Uncle Dunk and Griz's dad cleaned up a big cave on the path to Eagle Point and all the artifacts were carefully and respectfully laid out in the cave with all the information that Flossie could gather about them. When they were finished, the bears had a new Chief Growler museum and Griz had another great adventure to tell everyone about. |
