Griz's Missing Friends

Griz the bear lives on Bear Mountain not too far from here at the end of a sleepy little farm valley. Like all the bears on Bear Mountain, Griz is what scientists call a black bear. Rather a funny name really, as Griz and most of his family and friends are brown, but black bears come in all sorts of colors.

By all outward appearances Griz is a typical Bear Mountain bear, with little to distinguish him from many of the other bears; however, Griz has a personality that makes him unique. While many bears are solitary animals, preferring just to go about their business, Griz is very sociable and likes nothing better than to spend his days visiting with his friends and joining them on their adventures. This is the story of one very special day on Bear Mountain.

Griz woke up in his cave, rolled over, stretched and looked outside. It was a beautiful sunny day with little wispy white clouds slowly wandering across the sky. Griz loved the sunshine and said to himself "What a wonderful day, the perfect kind of day to visit my friends and perhaps have an adventure."

Griz strolled out of his cave and set off down to a stream for a drink and a wash. While washing behind his ears as his mother has always taught him, he thought "I'm feeling rather hungry; I think Iıll begin my day with a visit to my sister Dinah, she always has some honey around."

Arriving at Dinah's cave, Griz found it empty except for a big stack of honey pots in the corner. "Oh well," thought Griz, "perhaps Uncle Dunk will have caught a fish this morning. I will go and look for him." Griz checked all of Uncle Dunk's favorite fishing spots, but there was no sign of him anywhere. ""That's strange," thought Griz. "Uncle Dunk would never miss a chance to fish on a day like this unless something very important was going on."

Griz wandered off into the woods and gathered some berries for his breakfast. As he wandered through the woods eating his berries, he came across a meadow full of beautiful flowers. "This is just the sort of place I would expect to find my friend Rosie on a day like this. Pity she isn't here, I could share these yummy berries with her." he thought. A short while later he came across a campfire that had recently been put out. "That looks like the work of my best friend S'Morris, I wonder where he is on this fine day?" Griz wondered. Out loud he said "Maybe SıMorris and I could have a great adventure today if I could find him," hoping that S'Morris would hear him and come out of some hiding place. But nobody responded.

Griz looked everywhere for his friends. He checked the library cave, but even Flossie the librarian was not around. He checked his parents' cave, but they were not home. He checked all of Cousin Beau's favorite spots without success. Griz checked all of the usual places for Bubbles, Betty, Chip,

Zephyr and Miss Kitty, with no luck. Even Dusty's sheep were all alone, with no sign of Dusty or his dog. Finally Griz decided to head back to his cave. "I wonder where everyone is today, it's very odd that I cannot find any of my friends on such a nice day." Griz was a bit upset that the day did not bring any adventures. Griz also felt a growing sense of uneasiness, as if there were something important that he was forgetting, but what could it be?

Suddenly as he came around the mound that hid the entrance to his cave, there was a big shout of "SURPRISE!!!!!" There, gathered in front of his cave, were all his family and friends. The entrance to his cave was decorated with flowers, there were fish, honey pots and lots of other nice things in a pile beside the cave, and all of his friends had big grins on their faces as they joined together to shout "HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRIZ!"

"Of course!" exclaimed Griz, "Now I remember what I was forgetting, today is my birthday!" And with that he ran into the arms of his mother for a big hug and told the story of searching for everyone. Everyone had a good laugh at Griz's story, and the eating, drinking and storytelling went on long into the evening. Later that night as Griz crawled into bed he thought to himself "What a great birthday this was, and quite an adventure after all."
