Rosie's Garden

At the end of a sleepy little valley lies Bear Mountain. It is bald at the top with most of its slopes covered with pines, aspens and other trees. All in all it is a fairly typical mountain with one rather important distinction: it is home to a group of black bears who live quietly and undisturbed on its beautiful slopes. Now black bears tend to be solitary creatures, but on Bear Mountain there is one rather exceptional bear named Griz who loves nothing better than spending his days visiting with the other bears and taking them with him on his many adventures. This is the story of one such adventure.

It was a bright and cheery late spring morning and Griz was puttering around in his cave shortly after breakfast. He was wondering what he should do with such a fine day. He certainly didn't want to spend it inside, this was a day that just called out for exploring and playing. As he wandered through the woods listening to the birds sing, he began to think of his friend Rosie. Griz really like Rosie, and for some reason found that he always had a tickly feeling in his tummy when he was with her. Griz knew that on a day as nice as this Rosie would be out in one of the many small meadows enjoying the flowers, so he set out to find her.

It didn't take long for Griz to find Rosie, she was lying in a particularly pretty little meadow surrounded by beautiful wild flowers. "Hello Rosie" called Griz, "what are you doing today?" "Hi, Griz," replied Rosie, "just enjoying the flowers, they are so pretty this time of year." Rosie liked Griz, she thought he was kind and handsome. "Would you like to go for a walk?" Griz asked. "That sounds like fun!" replied Rosie. Two hours later Griz and Rosie were still walking and talking. Rosie was pointing out all the flowers to Griz and Griz was telling Rosie stories about his adventures.

As the two young bears shared a lunch of berries together, Rosie told Griz how she wished she could have flowers all the time, not just when they bloomed in the meadows. She told Griz how she wished she had a garden. The next morning Griz woke with a wonderful idea. He talked to his friends, he talked to Rosie's parents, he talked to his wise old Uncle Dunk who knew all there was to know about making things grow, and by the end of the day everything was arranged.

The next day Griz went to check with his best friend S'Morris and arranged for him to keep Rosie far away from her cave until supper. Next Griz went to all of Rosie's favorite meadows and gathered seeds from the flowers. Gathering seeds took most of the morning, and by the time he got back to Rosie's cave her parents were waiting. Rosie's parents helped Griz spend most of the rest of the afternoon digging with their claws and turning the soil beside Rosie's cave until they had turned it into a beautiful fine soil ready for planting.

By the time the three bears were finished, other bears had arrived. Dinah had brought a collection of small jars (empty honey pots, of course!) to store seeds in. Uncle Dunk had made a little watering can. Griz's parents had brought a big old barrel. Mr Frank had carved wooden gutters to catch water above Rosie's cave and direct it into the barrel. Among them the other bears had gathered together everything Rosie would need to grow and maintain a beautiful garden beside her cave.

By then it was about an hour before supper time and everything was in place. Griz went off to find S'Morris and Rosie. He found them beside a stream picking water cress for supper. "Hi, Rosie! Hi, S'Morris!" called Griz. "Hi, Griz want to join us for supper?" replied S'Morris. The three friends ate a supper of water cress, nuts and berries and shared stories. After supper Griz walked Rosie home. As the sun started to dip below the hills in the distance Rosie saw the beautiful new garden patch beside her cave. "SURPRISE!" exclaimed Griz.

Griz showed Rosie all the things that everyone had brought so she could grow flowers beside her cave. Rosie was happier than she could ever remember being. "Thank you! Oh, thank you!" she said to Griz, giving him a big hug and a kiss. "This is the most wonderful thing that anyone has ever done for me!" That night Griz went to bed with a smile on his face. In just a few weeks there were all sorts of bright flowers growing in Rosie's new garden, and from then on there was a beautiful flower garden beside Rosie's cave from early spring until late in the fall.
